As far as the video, I made it to try and address a gap I kept seeing in the videos that were currently in circulation. Of course there are lots of performance videos, which are cool, but which don't help the watcher figure out how to improve his or her techniques to the point that he/she might play such material. Then there are the instructional videos, most of which set out to explain the repertoire of one player who's operating on a relatively high level, but which again don't offer a road map or framework for an intermediate or aspiring player to reach the level where he or she might be able to negotiate those pieces or pieces like them.
I decided to try and offer that overview, that road map which leads from advanced beginnerhood across intermediate on to expert playing skills and repertoire. I included several exercises for the right hand, to develop independence of the thumb from the fingers and to teach the bass and melody formulas which get the right hand going in the right direction. For the left hand I cooked up some new concepts, to try and help players realize the separation of bass from melody in their chording as well, so that both bass lines and melody lines could become more complex and independent of each other. I offered four songs of varying difficulty, using each as a vehicle for learning some these skills, and also using them to talk about how to make sense of tunings and to introduce the partial capo. I spent some time on tech stuff and equipment, because I've observed that as people begin to perform they encounter a whole new world with which they also need to become acquainted.
By the end of the video, I hope that the player understands the lay of the land, and can visualize a path that he or she can use to negotiate his/her way towards expert playing, and also can thoroughly enjoy the time spent getting there.
